Melbourne's most colouful suburb.

A stroll along the seafront and shopping strips can be a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. There's lots to offer if you know where to look and you're certain to see your fair share of colourful and lively characters along the way. Local residents share the street with artists, tourists, backpackers and young party-harders looking to let their hair down. In fact you don't have to go looking... just grab a table and order a coffee.

Imported from Paris (and almost everywhere else).

When the historic kiosk on St Kilda Pier burnt down, the locals demanded that it be rebuilt just as it was. And so it was, with a modern addition you'll hardly notice. Before walking along the pier, take a look inside the pavillion on the beachfront. In the centre is a mosaic map of St Kilda by Melbourne artist, Mirka Mora, a Jewish refugee who came here from Paris during World War 2.

The Farmer's Market. The first Saturday of the month.

This is not your average shopping trip. You'll find organic vegetables and herbs, cheeses, honey, free-range eggs, sauces, fresh baked bread and a lot more. Everything is grown and made by the people selling the produce. It's quite unlike anything else in Melbourne; the market brings a slice of rural life to St Kilda and provides a Saturday food gathering experience you won't find anywhere else.

Acland Street. Gelati pink, coffee and chocolate.

There's a gentle European feel to much of St Kilda with its wall-to-wall cafes, bars, bookshops, restaurants, chic fashion boutiques and the cake shops of Acland Street and dining need not break the piggy bank. There are plenty of options from the moderately priced Cafe di Stasio to the Iberian flavours of Barcelona Cafe and the many cheap but cheerful cafes and pizza bars. Try the rustic bakery Il Fornaio on the corner of Fitzroy and Acland.

The Veg Out Community Garden.

Veg Out is an organic, chemical free garden run by volunteers. Originally a lawn bowling club, in 1998 the local council offered the club house as studio space to local artists who then turned the former bowling green into a garden that is well worth visiting. There are sculptures, installations and paintings integrated into the gardens. There's a regular Farmer's Market on the first Saturday of every month just behind the Veg Out garden.
